Mercelina Pichunu
Mercilina is a 40-year-old business woman from the DRC who now lives at the UNHCR refugee camp in Malawi, Dzaleka. She had polio as a child and now has post polio myelitis. Before she left the Congo, she had been prescribed a knee/ankle/foot orthosis (brace) (KAFO) for her weak left leg but she stopped wearing it because it was too heavy and because she had to wear the shoe attached to it. 500 miles has made her a new KAFO which supports and stabilises her weak knee extensors and ankle muscles, but which is much lighter and allows her to change her shoes. Mercilina is now mobile again and able to get back to business!
