Madalitso Phiri

13-year-old Madalitso Phiri was diagnosed with cancer in his right leg in July 2019. In September, his leg was amputated above the knee. On discharge, he was provided with crutches but he couldn’t walk to school because it was too far from his home. When his father’s work allowed, he managed to take Madalitso to school on the back of his bicycle but, unfortunately, Madalitso’s father died in December. His mother then had to ask neighbours to carry him to school.

In November 2019, 500 miles connected with Madalitso at an outreach to Salima and asked him to visit our centre in Lilongwe in few weeks when the swelling in his stump had reduced. In January 2020, Madalitso was fitted with his new leg and went home, able to stand and walk well with crutches. In time, he will not need to use his cutches all of the time. He went home happy that he can now return to school independently.
