FAMILY HISTORY

I was born in 1992 at Mzenga Hospital in Nkhata-bay district, located in the Northern Region of Malawi. As the second-born and only son among four siblings, I am Yohane Boblick Phiri. Tragedy struck my family when my father, a junior assistant at a government veterinary clinic, passed away in 2002. I spent my entire primary school years, from 2001 to 2009, living with my mother. Unfortunately, she too passed away in 2013, after working as a cleaner at a church-based private school.

EDUCATION BACKGROUND

In 2009 when I was selected at Katoto secondary school, my uncle took on the role of caregiver for the family, and with the support of extended relatives and community well-wishers, I was able to continue my education. Although losing my parents at a young age was a painful experience, it taught me resilience, independence, and the importance of education as a pathway to a better future.

In 2013, I successfully passed my Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE).

MY DREAMS AND CAREER

Ever since I was in secondary, my passion had been revolving around engineering but I couldn’t just figure out which field of engineering it would be. However, witnessing individuals with mobility impairments face daily challenges ignited a fire within me. I was captivated by the potential of prosthetic technology to transform lives. I became determined to become a prosthetic engineer, driven by the desire to create innovative solutions that would empower others to live life to the fullest.

From 2013-2018 after completing secondary school and trying out different endeavours such as farming to keep myself active and going, I finally applied to 500 miles, a renowned prosthetic and orthotic non-governmental organisation in Malawi. They in 2019, released an advert that they were looking for a bench worker at Mzuzu Central Hospital (MCH) and Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) respectively. I whole heartedly applied and attended both oral and practical interviews and was successfully offered the technician position at MCH, and I eagerly accepted.

Working alongside skilled technicians, as well as prosthetists and orthotists (P&Os) at MCH, I learned the intricacies of draping, bench alignment of prosthetic components, repairing and fabrication and all this, was indeed a wonderful experience. In 2021, before the handover of 500 miles’ P&O service at MCH to the Malawi Ministry of Health took place on 1st July, 500 miles offered me another opportunity to join the team at KCH in central region of Malawi to which I instantly said “yes” as I knew that this was still the very same golden opportunity through which I would be part of transforming people’s lives.

After few years of work at KCH, 500 miles recognized my potential, consistency and dedication, and in 2025, they sponsored me to pursue formal studies in a 3-year diploma program at Exceed Worldwide, School of Prosthetics and Orthotics Engineering in Cambodia in Asia. I was overwhelmed with gratitude and determination and I was very thankful and didn’t believe when this milestone was presented to me. Shout out indeed to 500 miles for believing in me and providing me with this chance. I really feel honoured and I’m excited to make the most of it.

Currently, though I’m still studying and my dream is still unfolding, I’m one step closer to realizing my dream. With each passing day, I’m fuelled by the opportunity 500 miles provided. I’m committed to making the most of this chance, knowing that their investment in me is not just about personal growth but also about giving back to my community.

My journey is far from over, but with 500 miles’ support, I’m confident and determined that I’ll turn my dream into a reality. I’m eager to apply my skills and knowledge to create life-changing prosthetic and orthotic solutions, inspiring others and honouring the trust 500 miles has placed in me.
