Device prices

When 500 miles handed over the Prosthetics and Orthotics Department at LION to The LION Trust, the LION Trust assumed responsibility for setting its device prices. In March 2026, the prices of all devices were increased to reflect the full current cost of their production. We support this decision and strategy because, given that many of its patients are unable to contribute very much (if anything) towards the cost of their devices, it is essential for the long-term sustainability of the service.

You can look at the price list (in Malawi Kwacha (MWK)) of the Prosthetics and Orthotics Department at LION here.

It doesn’t cost much to make a huge change in someone’s life

Due to the devaluation of the MWK relative to the British Pound (GBP), particularly in relation to labour costs in Malawi, these prices when converted to GBP, are still very low. For example, the cost in GBP of a transtibial prosthesis is only around £150. The same device through the NHS in Scotland would cost over £5,000 to make, and well over £10,000 if you were buying it privately. The Scottish device is made from superior materials and components and its function and comfort will usually be better – but both devices achieve the same basic purpose of getting the patient mobile, able to work, go to school and participate in community life – making £150 a complete bargain!

Below are the most commonly supplied prosthetic and orthotic devices/components for adults with their approximate prices in British Pounds (GBP). Obviously, these values will fluctuate in accordance with varying exchange rates. Just click on a device to find out how it works, when it is used and how it can transform a real person’s life.

(Children’s prostheses are a bit more expensive than prostheses for adults as the components are more intricate, but orthoses for children tend to be a bit cheaper as less materials are used.)
