FlySpec over Zambia

Projects Our projects are located in Malawi and Zambia. They are both peaceful countries with existing Scottish links. The need in Malawi and Zambia for the kind of support 500 miles will deliver is great. Less than 5% of people who could use prostheses and orthoses get them and these countries are among the poorest in the world. The national health services are under-funded and within these services, rehabilitation is a very low priority.

500 miles is currently supporting three initiatives. Click on the blue buttons below to read more.

The new 500 miles Prosthetic and Orthotic Centre at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi.

ZIOH
The Zambian Italian Orthopaedic Hospital (ZIOH) workshop in Lusaka, Zambia.

FlySpec
FlySpec based in Lusaka, Zambia – a flying service which delivers orthopaedic and reconstructive surgery and a prosthetic and orthotic service.

One SmileThese projects are worthwhile because for a small one-off spend per disabled person, prosthetic and orthotic support and orthopaedic and plastic surgery can have a life transforming effect for that individual. An operation to correct a club foot on a child living in rural Zambia costs around £100 and the cost of supplying an average prosthesis/orthosis to an adult in Malawi or Zambia is around £60. For the individual, receiving an operation or a device which allows him or her to be mobile and therefore to have a normal childhood, get an education, earn a living and participate in community life is truly life transforming. You can support these individuals directly by making a monthly or annual donation through our One Smile giving programme by following the link.
