Bonaly Primary School
500 miles is delighted that Bonaly Primary School Pupil Council has chosen to support 500 miles as part of its annual fundraising efforts this year. In deciding which charity to support each year, the School likes to choose one that does a significant element of its work with children. Olivia will go to talk to the pupils in March but it has yet to be decided exactly how the school will raise funds. Watch this space for news!

Thinktastic
500 miles is extremely grateful to have enjoyed the exceptional creative talents, support, generosity and friendship of Thinktastic from the outset. Thinktastic has created the logos for 500 miles, Miles for Smiles and One Smile and designed all of the printed material we have needed for our activities - and they have designed and built the websites for 500 miles and Miles for Smiles – all free!
Thinktastic was Scottish Business in the Community’s Small Company of the Year 2008 and recently became one of only 21 UK companies to be awarded the prestigious new Community Mark. Visit their website!

Trailbrakes
This young, enthusiastic company has had the enterprising idea of offering a 500 mile, 9 day mountain biking challenge round the cycling high spots of Scotland in support of 500 miles. This is the 2nd year of this initiative – long may it continue! The trip runs from 5th to 15th August 2010 however other dates are available for groups of 4 or more. This year it costs £800 to participate but £100 of that total comes to 500 miles - and of course any participant can chose to raise additional sponsorship for 500 miles.See Trailbrake's website for the details of this very generous and exciting proposal
Need a hand
Kathryn Gatt is a mature student living in Bristol, studying for a photography degree. Onher own initiative and as part of the second year of her course, she is staging an exhibition - a first for Kathryn who is a newcomer to photography.
Kathryn's exhibition is called 'Need a Hand'. It's a collection of photographs of people doing various everyday things with their hands - but they concentrate just on people's hands. In most of the photos you don't see the person, just a close-up of what they are doing with their hands. Some of them just show the hands in one photograph and the eyes in another if the eyes are expressing what the person is doing with their hands. Some examples are: playing violin, knitting, making sandcastles, kneading bread, texting on a mobile phone, taking photographs, playing with puppets.
While she was taking a photograph of her nephew playing with lego, it struck Kathryn how having the use of two hands can be taken for granted and how tragic it would be to lose one or both of your hands. That's what led her to think about finding a charity that helps amputees who have lost any of their limbs.
The exhibition will run for 2 weeks with a private preview night on 24th April - which is also Kathryn's 50th birthday. Rather than spending money on a party, Kathryn is paying all of the costs of the exhibition and will ask guests to donate to 500 miles.

Physio runs a marathon
Moira Burrows is going to run the London marathon for 500 miles on 25th April 2010. The connection with 500 miles is fantastic; Moira is Jeannette Adu-Bobie's physiotherapist at Roehampton, a large rehabilitation centre in the south. Jeannette is a multiple amputee and a great supporter of 500 miles herself. (See the Archive under July 2009 - MBA ball and survey.) More to follow.
